Soft moss a downy pillow makes, and green leaves spread a tent,
Where faerie fold may rest and sleep until their night is spent.
The bluebird sings a lullaby, the firefly gives a light,
The twinkling stars are candles bright, Sleep, Faeries all, Goodnight.

Let the (Gardening) Games Begin!

Everyone is so into the Olympics lately but this gardener just doesn't have time for that.  I have my own sport to begin training for..extreme gardening!  It is about this time of year that I realize how out of shape I have become over the lazy winter.  I was winded just pushing a wheelbarrow up my hill today-- with nothing in it!  After a string of below average temps for the entire month of February I was revived by the 52 degree temp that greeted me post workday.  (insert angels singing Hallelujah chorus here).  Unwilling to waste a moment of daylight I enlisted my chief hole digger (aka Glen) and my chief soil tester (aka Pixie) and set about planting some bareroot trees and shrubs.  Strike these off the growing to-do list...Grancy Greybeard (fringe tree), redbud tree, 3 burgundy glow barberry shrubs and a mockorange shrub.  Here I am standing by the redbud looking all proud.   I should get at least a bronze for today's accomplishment.

  1. Looks like there is colorful medals in your future. When all is planted and later in bloom, you will be rewarded with lots of glorious color for your labors.

  2. My eyes fooled me for a minute and I thought you wrote, barefoot trees and shrubs. Bareroot makes more sense.

Oh.....to have a 52 degree day sounds heavenly.

  3. I love the grancy graybeard! Wasn't today wonderful?

Did you see the article in the paper about the free tree seedlings give-away next week?

  4. George- never quite thought of my plantings as my "medals" but they are aren't they?
Donna- It's warmer but not enough for barefoot people or trees/shrubs yet! Today was even warmer at 58. I feel alive again!

  5. Jennifer, you asked how old my red twig dogwoods were. They were planted in 2004. We prune them down in the fall.

58 degrees? Send some of that up here. We had more snow last night. Looks pretty, but I'm about done with pretty snow.
